DC’s Black Eyes return to NYC following a 20 year hiatus.
Last Saturday, we hosted our final show of 2023 at Pioneer Works – and simply put, was it incredible. After reuniting last year following a nearly 20 year hiatus, iconic DC experimental art-punk band Black Eyes played Pioneer Works for a rare live engagement. They were joined by Brooklyn’s own noise-punk duo Deli Girls, and Atlanta’s post-punk band Algiers for a truly remarkable show.
Black Eyes’ return to the stage showed them playing as ferociously as ever, bringing a new maturity to their back catalog while sacrificing none of the music’s raw impact. This show allowed the band to reinterpret their music in a fresh landscape, draw connections to younger artists whose work parallels their own, and to explore their historical context via their 44 page zine Speaking In Tongues: Black Eyes 2001-2004 and the repress of their debut self-titled album via Dischord Records.
Shout out to Edwina Hay for being there to capture it all.
