Over the weekend, former AFL star and radio host Brendan Fevola played a grand final with his local team, the Diamond Valley 35s, against Williamstown Men’s 35s.
Fevola booted five goals aiding his team’s 70-point win over Williamstown and their claim of the local 2024 Premiership trophy – but it came at a gruesome cost.
Earlier in the week, Fevola had undergone a last-minute procedure to remove a concerning mole on his back.

“I did run the gauntlet because during the week I had a mole cut out… it was a bad one,” Fevola told his co-hosts Fifi Box and Nick Cody on The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick show.
“They got it all, which was good, but I had eight stitches in my back so the doctor said I wasn’t allowed to do any sport.”
But determined to join his team in what would end up being a victorious match, Fevola went against his doctors orders.

“I didn’t tell her I was playing in the Grand Final on Sunday, so I thought I’d run the gauntlet. And yeah, I had a bit of a sore back throughout the game,” he recalled.
It came at a cost. Caught up in the excitement of the Grand Final win, Fevola was none the wiser at first. It wasn’t until he jumped into the shower at home that he realised the extent of what he had done.
“I go, ‘Oh, I’ll have a quick shower’, so I got all my footy stuff out of the bag and I go, ‘Oh god, my back’s a bit sore’. I pulled out my jumper and on my [number] ‘five’, the top half of the ‘five’ was just all blood. I go, oh, is this [blood]?” he explained.

“I got in the shower and ripped it off and I looked in the mirror and there’s a massive, big hole in my back.
“I go, ‘Argh! I’ve got a hole in my back,’ and [my family’s] like, ‘Don’t go in the shower, you need to go to emergency straight away, it’ll get infected.”
On his family’s orders, Fevola went to the emergency room.

“I went to the hospital, and the doctor told me it’d be a five-hour wait… She said, ‘Come back tomorrow or after your show if you want, or you can sit and wait’,” he explained.
Fevola decided to wait and ended up staying in the hospital until 11:30pm. Despite the painful injury and late night hospital trip, Fevola was back on-air today and says it was all worth it.
”But anyway it’s stitched back up and I’m here and I’m up and about,” he said “It was all worth it.”
